Personal Trainer Course
Personal Trainer Course: The Simple Guide to Getting Qualified
If you want to become a personal trainer in Australia, you need to complete two courses, not just one.
Many people don’t realise that to legally work as a PT, you must first qualify as a Fitness Instructor which is the Certificate III before progressing to full personal trainer certification (Certificate IV in Fitness).
If you want to fast-track your career as a Personal Trainer, you can study both courses together in a combined program. This doesn’t mean skipping content or cutting corners—you’ll still complete all the required theory and practical training—but it means you can get qualified and start working sooner.
What Qualifications Do You Need?
To legally work as a personal trainer, you need both Cert III and Cert IV in Fitness qualifications:
- Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30321) – This qualifies you as a gym or Fitness Instructor but does not allow you to train clients one-on-one.
- Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40221) – This is what makes you a fully certified personal trainer, allowing you to run your own business and work independently. You cannot start the Cert IV in Fitness before completing the Cert III in Fitness
Study Online or In-Person – What’s Right for You?
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to studying. You can choose to complete your personal trainer course online or in-person, depending on your lifestyle, learning preferences, and budget.
In-Person Training:
- Attend face-to-face practical sessions at a designated location.
- Get hands-on coaching and real-time feedback from instructors.
- Usually more expensive than online courses due to extra resources.
Online Training:
- More affordable and flexible—study at your own pace, from anywhere.
- You must find a gym to complete your practical assessments—but IEFP can help you arrange this.
- Some students struggle with online learning, but IEFP assigns you a personal mentor with direct contact details for support whenever you need it.
- If online study isn’t working for you, you can switch to face-to-face training, though the price difference applies.
