How Long Does It Take to Become a Personal Trainer?
Becoming a personal trainer doesn’t take forever, and you don’t need to quit your job to do it. With flexible options like online learning and fast-track courses, most Australians can be ready to work in six to twelve months.
What qualifications do you need?
To work as a personal trainer in Australia, you need a Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40221). Some people start with Certificate III (SIS30321) and then move into Cert IV, while others go for a combined or fast-tracked version that covers both. Most providers include first aid, CPR and pre-exercise screening as part of the package so you’re ready to work safely from day one.
How long does each qualification take?
- Cert III: Around 6 to 12 months, depending on how you study.
- Cert IV: Another 6 to 12 months on top of that, or less if you go full-time or online.
- Combined Cert III + IV: Between 9 to 18 months total, though some online students finish faster.
Some providers, like IEFP, offer self-paced online learning, so you can push through in as little as three months if you stay consistent.
Can you go faster?
Yes. If you’ve got time and motivation, fast-track or self-paced Cert IV programs can get you qualified in under 3 months. But most people take 6 to 12 months. You’ll usually have up to a year to finish each certificate at your own pace.
What else do you need to start working?
Once you’ve got Cert IV, you’ll need to:
- Register with an industry body (AUSactive, FITREC, or Physical Activity Australia)
- Get public liability and professional indemnity insurance
Some gyms and employers still ask for both Cert III and IV, so check before applying.
How long before you’re earning?
Plenty of students land their first job within 6 to 12 months. With Cert IV, registration, and insurance sorted, you can start working in gyms, run classes, or coach clients online or in parks.
Confidence comes with experience. After a few years working with different people, rehab clients, athletes, older adults, you’ll have a much stronger base to build on.
What comes next?
You can level up with:
- A Diploma of Fitness (about 1 year)
- A Bachelor degree in Exercise or Sport Science (3+ years full time)
- Short courses in nutrition, pre/postnatal fitness, kids’ training, mental health and more
What does it cost?
Combined Cert III + IV courses usually cost $3,500 to $6,000, depending on your provider and support level. Many offer payment plans or government funding to spread out the cost.
Real-life example:
“I worked full-time and studied nights online, plus weekends for the practical side. After 8 months I had my Cert IV, first aid and insurance sorted. I started training clients in the park through word of mouth, and learned more from hands-on experience than any course ever taught me.”
