From Day One to Industry Expert: How I Built a Career in Fitness

I still remember stepping into a gym for the first time at 15. I was just a kid wanting to get stronger for sport. But something clicked that day—this was where I belonged. The energy, the challenge, the constant push to be better. Fitness wasn’t just something I did; it was who I was.

And one day, I told myself, I’d own my own gym.

Taking the Leap

For years, I followed the ‘safe’ path. Business degree. Office jobs I hated. Trade work. Travel. No matter where life took me, though, two things never changed: I was always training, and people were always asking me for fitness advice.

One day, my boss said, “You’d make a great PT.” And that stuck with me.

At 24, I stopped ignoring what I already knew. I enrolled in Certificate III & IV in Fitness, studying while grinding through a physically demanding job. I wasn’t just learning—I was planning my escape.

Hitting the Ground Running

I wasn’t about to sit around waiting for the ‘perfect time’ to start. Five days before my final assessment, I walked into a gym interview.

“If you pass, you can start immediately,” they said.

So I passed. And the very next day, I was a qualified personal trainer.

Now, picture this: 18 trainers already competing for clients. No one knew me. No one cared. But I had one thing going for me—I was relentless.

On day one, they told me to write my five-year goals. The last one? Own a gym.

People told me it was too ambitious. Too hard. I didn’t care.

Breaking the Rules & Building Success

Most trainers struggle in their first year. I refused to be ‘most trainers.’

Within six months, I was fully booked—35+ hours a week of face-to-face coaching. Within a year, I was so busy I brought on a subcontractor and started mentoring.

I wasn’t just running a business. I was building something bigger.

An Accidental Move Into Fitness Education

At 14 months in, I got a call. A national training company wanted me to mentor new PTs. I said no—too busy.

They called again. And again.

By the time I said yes, I had the opportunity to launch Newcastle’s first face-to-face PT course. Over the next three years, I ran the largest campus intakes in Australia—eight in a row.

Somehow, I’d gone from brand-new PT to double award-winning fitness educator.

Making the Big Move—Opening My Own Gym

It was time to chase the biggest goal on my list.

I didn’t just want a gym. I wanted a high-performance training facility. A space for PTs, athletes, and clients who were serious about results.

Four years and ten months after setting that goal—I made it happen.

We built more than a gym. We built a hub for training, education, and elite coaching. And we didn’t stop there—I integrated a training organisation to teach Cert III & IV in-house, helping more PTs launch their careers.

Helping Others Do the Same

The best part? Helping others follow their own path.

I’ve now mentored and trained PTs across the country. Helped four trainers from my gym open their own facilities. Developed nationally recognised Cert III & IV courses, available through IEFP.

And I’m still pushing forward.

What About You?

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a personal trainer, here’s the truth:

It’s not just a job—it’s a lifestyle. It’s about waking up excited to work. It’s about changing lives—including your own.

I started with nothing but passion. Where could it take you?
